An award-winning crime writer, his narratives are conceived during his day job cleaning the subway
Enrique invited us onto his rooftop where we chatted as the sun set across the city.
The main media organisations have dubbed me ‘The Subway writer’.
They don’t believe that people who work manual labour jobs can, or maybe even should, have an artistic pursuit. They think it should be a luxury, reserved only for the middle-class renegade. The fact I enjoy writing isn’t strange and I believe everyone should be able to follow their passions.
My real nickname (what my friends call me) is Kike, and I’ve worked loads of jobs. I’ve been a baker, a driver, a street vendor, the list goes on, but I’ve always written. It’s what I enjoy – unfortunately it doesn’t put enough food on the table for my family.
It’s crazy really, you’d think having been published 5 times and after picking up numerous awards, I’d be able to quit the 9-5. Alas I’m stuck living the life of a secret agent, writer by day, subway cleaner by night.
Of course, I still dream of hitting the big time, like getting a film adaptation, but for most part I just do it because it makes me happy - crazy according to my daughter. Sometimes I can’t stop, even writing during my breaks at work.
LOOK AT YOURSELF THROUGH THE EYES OF THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU, THEY’RE WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT.
I’m always trying to improve, not just for my books but for my family too.
We’ve been brewing a premium pilsner with real substance since 1842. A naturally green hop aroma, a crisp finish and a clean, confident bitterness from the combination of two Hallertau hops: Emerald and Magnum.
